The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, together with Art Production Fund, is very happy to announce P3Studio artist-in-residence Brent Sommerhauser. Although glass encompasses us, its use as an art material comes with an air of mystery. Inside P3Studio, Sommerhauser will introduce visitors to kiln-formed glass, demonstrate the entire process of dealing with it and showcase the potential for this dynamic art-making material.
Visitors will have the chance to produce small ‘sketches‘ in glass by adding wealthy color mixtures of glass powder, glass strings along with other glass elements over Bullseye hand crafted glass tiles that Sommerhauser will fire in the Olympic glass kilns. The resulting tiles will be photographed and shared on his Instagram account @P3ArtGlass. Then, the tiles will be combined and contribute to a growing work that will be a record of those that participated, filling P3Studio with light, color and pattern.
Kiln-formed glass is produced by putting together and heating opalescent and transparent glass elements inside a kiln close to 1,500 F until it softens and fuses together into single sheet of glass that may have exceptional color definition, richness and saturation. As the actual design process can be very direct, the fusing process generally takes days to get fully recognized. Following the initial fusing, the glass could be further altered, layered and fused over and over before the preferred form and color is accomplished. Sommerhauser, a Vegas-based artist, received his Masters of Fine Art from Ohio State University and has since exhibited in group and solo displays over the United States and abroad.
